NCC, NSO, NSS & NCA

First-year students have a credit requirement to fulfil by opting for one of the following three options.

This is considered a Pass/Fail course. Attendance will be monitored, and students who cross the minimum attendance threshold will be given a Pass grade at the end of the year.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The National Cadet Corps is the civilian youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces, which inculcates discipline and patriotism in its volunteers. Students who join the NCC complete training for parade marches, which they take part in during occasions such as the campus Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. Cadets can also attend training camps where they are given NCC training according to the applicable syllabus (Army, Navy, or Air Force), as well as survival skills.

National Sports Organisation (NSO)

The National Sports Organisation is a government programme that encourages the pursuit of athletics and sports among students and the youth. Students can join one of the wide variety of sports groups and hone their talents using the well-equipped sports complexes and equipment on campus.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme is a voluntary organisation that facilitates students and youth to perform community service. IIT Madras has an active volunteer team that runs several projects, enabling students to positively impact their surrounding community. First-year students who enrol are allotted a project team, which they contribute towards. Credits can be earned through project milestones, winter internships, and attending events such as lectures, movie screenings, and awareness campaigns that the NSS managerial team organise.

Students can continue to volunteer after their compulsory first-year service, assuming more managerial positions in the team.
