The IIT Madras campus has many avenues for students and researchers to explore their interests, learn something new, and form lasting bonds in its rich cultural scene.
Sangam is the umbrella under which all student-run cultural and literary activities happen in the institute. It has several clubs, oriented around the visual arts, music, theatre, writing, quizzing, oratory, word games, and many more fields. These clubs host various workshops and competitions throughout the academic year, the most popular being the LitSoc competitions.
Students and researchers meet in associations based on shared linguistic and regional backgrounds. These are popular on campus for their cultural programmes and the festival celebrations they organise, which all residents are invited to. These sabhas, samitis, and mandals announce their events on smail.
Various departments often have in-print or online publications to showcase the creative and academic work of their students and researchers. Find out from your department if it has such a publication and how you can be involved with it.
Sangam Clubs & LitSoc
LitSoc ("Literary and Social") refers to the series of inter-hostel competitions organised by Sangam clubs. Students participate on behalf of their hostels and gain place points for their hostel leaderboards. The hostel with the most points wins the coveted LitSoc trophy, which inspires a lot of friendly rivalry among students.
To participate in club events, keep an eye out for event announcement emails on smail. If you are interested in being an active LitSoc participant, contact your hostel's Literary Secretary or Cultural Secretary.
